Sphaeroderus sp - Sphaeroderus schaumii

Sphaeroderus sp - Sphaeroderus schaumii
Spruce Knob lake (1200m), Randolph County, West Virginia, USA
July 29, 2013
I think it is Sphaeroderus schaumii, but could it be S.bicarinatus?

Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing the great photos.

You're right, this is schaumii. S. bicarinatus is only found in the southern Appalachians, NC, TN, SC, GA, AL. The two species are closely related, along with S. nitidicollis. The main feature all three share is the very deeply-incised "trench" below the mentum. bicarinatus has a straighter aedeagus, I believe, and usually a longer pronotum, but there's tons of variation in the latter.
