In dead stem of a gentian, Gentiana sp., possibly G. andrewsii (bottle gentian)

I collected several of these puparia in gentian stems; most seemed to be in the upper half or upper third of the stems.

Placement in Melanagromyza is speculative, based on color of puparium and larval feeding habit

Rearing in progress

Ruler units are 32nds of an inch

Williams (1999)
reports rearing a Melanagromyza sp. from overwintered bottle gentian stems. To my knowledge that is the first report of this species.
