Apioninae in Desmodium seed - Coelocephalapion decoloratum

Apioninae in Desmodium seed - Coelocephalapion decoloratum
Plymouth Rock, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
September 20, 2017
For many years after walking through the planted prairie, I've pulled Showy Tick Trefoil, Desmodium canadense seed pods off of my clothing. For a few years I've noticed holes in the pods. Last year (2016) I thought I really ought to look closer. This year I looked closer.

September 20, 2016: seed pods opened to a weevil pupa, teneral adult, wasp pupae & adults, some observed for several days
September 26, 2017: another walk through the prairie and more pods on clothes, one of which had a weevil pupa

WI DNR lists 3 weevils associated with Desmodium: Coelocephalapion decoloratum, Coelocephalapion emaciipes, Trichapion reconditum

L. Anchor says: “… Coelocephalapion decoloratum. The larvae of this species develop in the legumes of Desmodium and Lespedeza. According to Kissinger (1968), this species is known from Henry, Story, and Johnson counties in Iowa.”
