This picture of this part of the Earwig makes me think of the business end of an Antlion.

 
Right!
For some reason I held the impression for years that their forceps were fake or decoy mandibles. It wasn't till seeing an image on bugguide of an earwig with an ant clamped in its forceps that I realized I had been wrong, wrong, wrong.
