larva in a birds nest - Pyrrharctia isabella
Craggy Rocks, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
December 16, 2017
found 4 of these while looking through the contents of several bird nest boxes
I didn't have the patience to wait for them to unfurl.

Some overwintering Isabellas
apparently can look like this

That does look like them.
I'll be darned.
But that brings up another question: I've never been able to rear these when collected in the fall, only in the spring. And I'd really like to get ONE adult out of these 4. They are in the fridge, with some of the bird nest material and a bit of damp paper towel. The fridge in winter and the damp paper towel are new from previous tries.
