Blue legged Centipede In Hawaii

Blue legged Centipede In Hawaii
Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA
October 2, 2017
Have found 3 of these in our Honolulu home. One dead in the clothes dryer, one dead in the toilet, and one alive hiding behind the refrigerator. Very tiny, at least compared to the giant red headed centipedes we see (knock on wood) outside. They don’t seem as big as the blue tinted centipedes of legend here. Biggest was just under 2” I think. Body isn’t blue. Just legs are bright blue.
Apologies for poor picture quality. I’ve heard a centipede with blue is the worst kind of bite, and I panic a wee bit.

There is a species that is in
There is a species that is introduced in Hawaii that has blue legs: Scolopendra subspinipes. The blue turns to red as they age, apparently, so it may be a juvenile of the same species as your larger outdoor critters. You'll want to check with someone more local or more knowledgable, though, or see if you can get a better photo. If that is what you have, it may make you feel better to know that people keep them as pets, but yes, they bite, and some people do have an allergic reaction to the bite, so they are the kind of pet that usually lives in a pretty aquarium and isn't actually petted. Not dangerous like a poisonous snake. More like a bee sting, from what I understand. These eat other insects, so if you're finding them in your house occasionally, they probably just wandered in from outside and you can shoo them back out again. If you find them all the time that would indicate you've got a larger pest problem that they are actually helping control for you.

Now that I searched that name
Now that I searched that name plus “juvenile” the results photos are exactly right. You solved my mystery! That explains wht 2 of 3 have been dead probably, too.
Many Thanks Maggie!

Thank you! I wondered if they were juveniles. We did have a temporary bug problem, and they seemed to come with it. Thanks for the info!
