It may be a small fuzzy species of Eleodes... will move to family level for now just to be safe.

I still have it. What can I do to get an ID?

 
get a photo of the ventral su
get a photo of the ventral surface of the abdomen (or look at it) and see if there is a membrane between the last two segments. The only Teneb that looks like this and has a membrane is Eleodes sp. I think there are a couple fuzzy ones.
