Abagrotis belfragei - Hodges #11046 - Abagrotis

Abagrotis belfragei - Hodges #11046 - Abagrotis
114 Clarke Place, Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA
June 26, 2017
Size: medium
Attracted to blacklights. The specimen was sent to Chuck Harp to confirm the ID.

Moved to genus
Moved from Abagrotis belfragei.

Don Lafontaine does not think that belfragei is in the running and that it could be reedi but examination of the specimen would be needed to confirm an ID. I emailed Chuck but neglected to copy you for which I apologize. If I hear anything, I'll forward it to you.

Any Update?
Did Chuck Harp confirm the ID? Did he eliminate Abagrotis cupida?

Abagrotis cupida?
This appears to be consistent with the description of the dark form of Abagrotis cupida in Lafontaine (1998) (1), p. 237. Belfragei would be far out of range in your location while cupida would be expected.

Did Chuck confirm the belfragei determination? Was it dissected? If not, I suggest moving this to cupida or genus.

FYI - DNA barcoding does not distinguish species for many in this genus including the afore mentioned so don't be fooled by BOLD species pages. This is documented in Zahiri et al. (2017) (2). Table S8 lists all noctuoids species which share DNA barcodes (can't be distinguished based on barcode).

Moved
Moved from Abagrotis.
