Sometimes, I start using made-up common names for things, before I know their "real" identities. This one became the "ugly tube" caterpillar because its tube-shelters, though cryptically colored, were rather messy and unsightly, having frass and various shriveled plant parts intermingled with the silk.

Like the shelters in which they hide as larvae, the adult moths are cryptic too. The adult, of which I was able to rear several, became the "Oreo moth" because of its dark colors contrasting with creamy white:



They have a charming habit of hanging upside down from a twig, as shown in the portrait of the adult in this series (last photo).
