Johannsenomyia argentata - female

Johannsenomyia argentata - Female
Galena, Casper Bluffs, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, USA
July 21, 2017
This is a new genus and species for the guide, Johannsenomyia argentata. Only two species listed in the MND. This was keyed out using Malloch's guide to Illinois Chironomidae. The silvery abdomen is diagnostic for this species. The genus can be recognized by the stout spines on the 5th tarsomere combined with the single long tarsal claw of the mid and hind legs.

According to Malloch, males are unknown for this one. Originally described from Washington DC, and with numerous reports from across Illinois, May-August. 3.5-4.5 mm

A single specimen was collected from a UV trap.

Literature
Better to use Wirth (1962) in this group. "Malloch (1915) confused two species under Johannsenomyia halteralis."

Wirth, W. W. 1962. A reclassification of the Palpomyia-Bezzia-Macropeza groups, and a revision of the North American Sphaeromiini (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae). Annals of the Entomological Society of America 55:272-287.

According to Wirth's key, this is argentata based on "Female abdomen with silvery pollinosity, hind femur with yellow subapical ring." (Shining brownish black abdomen and ringless femur would make it annulicornis.)
