Moved
Based on Peter's input below.
Moved from Vivid Metallic Ground Beetles.

This should be checked again with the keys,
Chlaenius emarginatus is pretty different- has VERY long mandibles, most noticeably. Also the pronotum is shaped differently.
This looks like it could be tricolor, but there are some similar species.

Moved from Chlaenius emarginatus.

emarginatus mandibles, for comparison:

Using reference insects.
We were using reference insects for this. Will double check next week when I have access to the collection.

Subgenus Chlaeniellus in Wisconsin
with apparent bicolored dorsum and straight labrum must be common Chlaenius tricolor tricolor. I'm always curious about the whereabouts of Wisconsin caraboid specimens. I gathered by "reference" insects you meant a small collection of index species at your field side. The "collection" you spoke of might be one of the university collections - the best being WIRC (Madison) or MPM (Milwaukee) for comparative study.
