mayfly sequence - Ephoron
Bellevue State Park, Jackson County, Iowa, USA
July 16, 2017
This series shows the rapid-fire molting of mayflies on the bank of the Mississippi River. They first landed and folded down their wings as they began to pull forward out of their old skin. Once they freed their wings, they were about halfway out. They raised their wings vertically before taking off, carrying their old skin with them. We watched this process dozens of times as hundreds flew and landed along the shoreline.
