False Mealworm Beetle - Alobates pensylvanicus

False Mealworm Beetle - Alobates pensylvanicus
Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, USA
April 7, 2005
Size: 20 mm
Found under bark. Captured and posed. (It played dead most of the time--only after I left it alone for several minutes did it spread its legs and get ready to walk.) I'll try to show the anatomic details of this individual, and compare with the detailed descriptions I've been able to find. Tenebrionids are tough.

This photo shows overall shape and prominent punctures on elytra--fairly distinctive. Pronotum flared at base and tapering toward head is also somewhat distinctive. Compare plates XLVI and XLVII of Dillon (1) for illustrations of big, black darkling beetles. See also
