Long Dash or Indian -
Atalopedes campestris
-
Bath, Steuben County, New York, USA
June 17, 2017
Size: about 1 inch
I think I have correctly narrowed it down to a Long Dash or an Indian Skipper, but I am unsure past that.

Hesperia
The two white patches on the forewing which extend beyond the other patches in the PM band suggest that it is an Indian skipper.

Sachem skipper
Skippers can be VERY tricky. I am surprised it is a sachem because the map I have doesn't show them in NYS, but I see the commentary says they are"immigrant northward", and the chart in the reading shows they are "rarely" seen in NY. Thank you for your help.

Like you I was hopeful for an Indian Skipper
since rather uncommon. But the white spots, mid alignment of ventral chevron, and isolated brown area at the middle of ventral hindwing trailing edge clearly indicates a Sachem.
