Found this scale on a young tuliptree, Liriodendron tulipifera. I think the small oval dots may be young insects, but in the field they simply looked like part of the bark.

Well, the big one does look a bit like ...
... the tuliptree scale, Toumeyella liriodendri (family Coccidae)(but I'm certainly no expert). And the small black ones could easily be the immature stage (=crawlers).
