page for Mesocapnia
Hi folks,
I photographed a female Capniid stonefly that I thought could be a Mesocapnia species. I wrote to a stonefly expert, Jon Lee, about the photos I posted to bugguide and here is what he wrote back...
Hi Bill,
Happy New Year! I think you are correct. I would guess it is Mesocapnia projecta. M. projecta, M. autumna and M. porrecta have forewings with those “windows” (distinct hyaline spots around cord) - nice pics. Diagnostic characters for M. projecta females are the hyaline spots and middle of posterior margin of subgenital plate forming a large distinct point, but this character seems to be variable from a very distinct point to a rounded point. I looked at M. projecta females from: OR, Marion Co, Silver Falls (squared off point); CA, Humboldt Co., mountain creek (very distinct point); CA, Humboldt Co., Mad River (rounded point like your pic). The males from these sites are all similar. I have discussed this with Dr. Baumann and Mesocapnia maybe needs more study? Best reference: Baumann and Gaufin. 1970. The Capnia projecta complex of western N.A. Trans. Am. Ent. Soc., 96:435-468. Unfortunately I don’t have a PDF of it.
Cheers,
Jon
Given that, could someone erect a page for the genus Mesocapnia and move my images there? In the meanwhile, I've stashed my photos under the family Capniidae here...
