Pterotichus (Hypherpes) sp.
is currently as far as I can take this cryptic female specimen. The Hypherpes-complex is particularly a messy taxonomic group in the state of California. We desperately need a modern North American revision of that group. Currently available identification keys and descriptive accounts are incomplete and those by T. Casey have added confusion.

Here are a couple anatomic notes about this specimen. Pronotum under scope (better than posted images) shows a uniform reddish brown coloration that contrasts with piceous elytra. That coloration might be characteristic of the species or simply reflect immaturity. Traits that tend to point away from sibling subgenus Leptoferonia are: relatively large body (ABL 12 mm); epipleura are crossed preapically; epipleura are not carinate.

Thank you Jim for this interesting specimen which I'm sure to revisit. Feel free to get an opinion from Hypherpes authority Kip Will.

Moved, tentatively..
