Thanks for the ID! Is “leucopogon” the old name (the one I should use)?

Hi Alice: yes, this is the 'old' (= original) name, proposed in 1893 by Williston-- as a new species of Asilus. However, an older named "Asilus leucopogon" existed (named by Wiedemann in 1828), and this species has a 'perpetual right' to that name: Williston's fly must have another name.

A ms. checklist was prepared in 1987 (Fisher & Wilcox) that included a replacement name for this species, "Proctacanthella willistoni (Fisher & Wilcox)." However, this ms. has not yet been published, so this new name is not yet available. (A concerted effort is underway to change this: Dr. Robert A. Cannings and I hope to have a newly revised checklist published "soon"...)

Cheers,

Eric
