Could this be still another color variation of an Eumorpha fasciata - Banded Sphinx - Hodges#7865 caterpillar?
Last year we had a red ones and green ones and multicolored ones.
This year there is a golden one feeding one the same plants, water primrose, as a multicolored one.
The patterns seem to me to be the same, but colors are very different.

I think you're right
the pattern and that stumpy tail are a good fit. Sometimes caterpillars undergo a color change (often golden or brown) shortly before pupation - I wonder if that could be the explanation, or if it's just one of those highly variable caterpillars.
