Leafminer, aster - Bucculatrix staintonella

Leafminer, aster - Bucculatrix staintonella
Meadow Farm, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
01/29/17 Three larvae out of their mines (which were in 2 different leaves in the same rearing container). Fresh overwintering leaves of the original host plant weren't accessible but I managed to scrounge up overwintering leaves of another, similar aster. By the end of the day all three larvae had entered one of these new leaves (whew!!). These two (which I believe to be the same two that were inside the leaf shown in this series) appear to be different instars. When outside their leaves, larvae were quite capable wanderers; I believe they exited their original leaves because there was insufficient tissue left to mine.
