Robberfly ? - Nicocles

Robberfly ? - Nicocles
Pleasanton, Alameda ? County, California, USA
September 29, 2007
Size: 5/8 "
I found this ( Robberfly ? ) at Sunol regional wilderness park in a dry field . I am not positive that it is a Robberfly , but that is the first thing that came to mind looking at his face . The body looks pretty skinny though . I noticed the white band on it's abdomen tip and underbelly . As soon as I went for a head-on shot it flew away . Thanks for any help in it's identification , sincerely Beth

Yes sir
This is a robber. And it is in the Nicocles genus. There are nine species in CA and I have no experience with the western species. I will have Dr. Fisher have a look. Many of this genus have the shining reflectant silver on the terminal segments like a firefly.
