Empty Moth Cocoon (?) - Megalopyge

Empty Moth Cocoon (?) - Megalopyge
Peachtree Corners, Gwinnett County, Georgia, USA
December 13, 2016
I have observed empty cocoons like this attached to hardwood tree trunks on three occasions. All were about 0.5 - 0.75 inches long by about 0.25 inches wide and all had an open flap/ lid on one side.

I found photos of several similar looking cocoons depicted on the internet which were identified as Southern Flannel Moth cocoons. To date I have not observed a Flannel Moth at this location (but know better than to handle them should I ever see one...)

As always thanks for your help with ID.
