Short antennae, 3 segments with an arista. Lack the ptilinal suture on the head that characterizes the Schizophora (Calyptratae+Acalyptratae).
May be paraphyletic to the rest of the Cyclorrhapha. The colourful and diverse flower flies (Syrphidae) are the best-known family in this group. The hump-backed flies (Phoridae) are poorly known and hard to identify, but are ubiquitous and very diverse.
