I would concure with you, Dasymutilla sackeni, based not only on it's appearence but also it's range. They have a nasty sting.

 
Right on! Dasymutilla sackenii
There are a few similar species, but this is D. sackenii based on thorax shape and scutellar scale + carina anterior to scale.
