I was going to ask, elder, or elderberry, but I see you clarified that. I have found this species in elderbery also, near St. Louis MO, and need to get a picture up here. Nice find of this northernmost representative of the genus in the Americas. It's probably more commmon that we realize, and might be better known if we split more pitthy stems. By the way, If you happen to see a major worker or queen from the colony, a picture of its face would be a nice additon to this post.

I was hoping you'd recognize this ant (I had no clue what it might be). I wasn't aware of the genus...browsing on BG I've just now learned about the uniquely modified face you mention...astonishing.
