Red veiled moth - Phyllodesma americana

Red veiled moth - Phyllodesma americana
Maplesville, Chilton County, Alabama, USA
March 10, 2018
This was a rather unusual moth. At first it reminded me of a cicada riding on a carpet. His head was burnt orange, very wide, and very fuzzy. His "veil" appears to be draping down low over his legs. It is wavy on the edges. From about the AP line and down, his wings are rather gray. He has two faint dark gray lines running from his basal area to his apices. He was about 2 cm wide and 4 cm long.
