Euxoa comosa - form ontario is similar in appearance and overlaps range of fumalis in southeastern Canada. E. comosa ontario is slightly smaller with forewing length 14-18 mm. Forewing of ontario is mottled brown with maculation obscure or contrasting, but if contrasting, then median line is prominent as well. Where the range of the two species overlap, fumalis is found in open deciduous forests, whereas ontario is found in forests of spruce and fir. (1)
