One evening last fall there were thousands of these aphids which showed up attracted to a black light.

I'm thinking Rhopalosiphum padi
They have a teeny tiny cauda; the siphunculi are tilted at a ~45° angle at the apex; the base of antennal segment six is fairly short; the m-vein is forked twice, with the second fork close to the wing margin; the legs are banded; and I often collected these in large numbers in September in Wisconsin.

From what I can see in this pic (it is so tough to photograph aphids) your specimens match all these characters.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to try taking some better photos this year. Just looked through the photos I have from that night and I think I one that shows the wing pattern.

Definitely Rhopalosiphum, and I still feel pretty confident about R. padi, that dorsal shot really shows the tiny cauda and shape of the siphunculi. I'm only a little hesitant to say definitely padi, because oxyacanthae looks very similar and is widespread as well.
