Chauliognathus maybe deceptus - Chauliognathus deceptus

Chauliognathus maybe deceptus - Chauliognathus deceptus
6 miles NW Lyons, Boulder County, Colorado, USA
September 18, 2011
Size: BL 10 mm
Taken on Aster porteri in the CO foothills at 6400' elevatiion, 6 miles north of Lyons, elevation 5300'. At time of photographing it, I noted that it seemed smaller than the other soldier beetles. Resembles C. deceptus in darker red coloration rather than the orange of C. basilis and the lack of the usual band of orange in C. basalis. Also, the stripes on the underside (next image) seem quite different.
Since we live in the foothills, I thought all our Chauliognathus would be C. deceptus. Not so. C. basalis is prevalent here, especially on Gumweed (Grindelia squarrosa). This is the only one that could possibly be C. deceptus that we have photographed in 25 years. Any help is much appreciated.
