Size: 1/2 "
I thought this was a female velvet Ant at first until I saw the wings . This fellow was found on flowering Coyote bush and only let me take two photos of him . Thanks for any comments , Beth

Moved
Moved from Dasymutilla.

This is a wasp
called a velvet ant. Lot's of info in the guide, and one of the Velvet ant specialists will probably be able to tell you which one.

Dasymutilla aureola?
The genus is Dasymutilla, the species might be D. aureola. I'm not 100% sure, I'm moving this to the genus page, it will have more luck there.

I agree
The head shape is definitive for D. aureola. From the side view it is sort of hard to tell, but I am pretty confident that this is the wide-headed D. aureola.
