Possibly Wool Sower Gall (Callirhytis seminator). - Callirhytis quercusoperator
Near Comfort, TX., Kendall County, Texas, USA
April 1, 2018
Size: about 2 inches across
I spotted this on a Texas Red Oak aka Spanish Oak (Quercus buckleyi) in the Texas Hill Country. First time I have ever seen a gall like this. It was white and cottony, with pinkish tinges throughout (best described as looking like "cotton candy"). There were 2 or 3 oak catkins that appeared to be protruding out/ possibly the gall had enclosed part of the catkins. After doing a little searching, I believe it is a type of cynipid wasp gall --Wool Sower Gall (Callirhytis seminator). Please let me know if this is correct and if it's unusual for this tree/ this area. Thank you!

Wool sower galls are only on white oaks (and don't have catkins poking out of them).
