tobacco hornworm

tobacco hornworm
Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas, USA
October 7, 2007
Size: 5 1/2"
I found this tobacco hornworm on my tomato plant on October 5, 2007 and bought it in. It became very active this AM so I took it back outside, put it back on the plant, and watched. It quickly moved to the dirt and started burrowing about 10 feet from my garden. I dug up the dirt around it and brought it in.
I noticed that the calendar doesn't mark this guy as being seen in October in Texas. This has been an unusual year for weather here this summer--cooler and wetter. Is this why he's here so late?
