Stubby black fly on Symphyotrichum lanceolatum - Gymnoclytia occidua

Stubby black fly on Symphyotrichum lanceolatum - Gymnoclytia occidua
Starke County, Indiana, USA
October 1, 2017
Size: similar to a house fly
I photographed this gray and black banded fly on Symphyotrichum lanceolatum in a marshy meadow near Bogus Run. To me, it looks like Gymnnoclytia occidua -- it seems common enough, but I note that Indiana is a rather conspicuous hole in its range map here on BG, so it seemed worth posting for a confirmation.
