Marsh Beetle - Contacyphon

Marsh Beetle - Contacyphon
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
October 4, 2007
I think it's a beetle. Is it possible to ID something that has virtually *no* distinctive or interesting markings? :) If I run into another little critter like this again, what would be helpful for me to shoot to help in the ID?

Thanks, Tom. Looks like that's right on the money! :)
