Variegated Fritillary - Euptoieta claudia

Variegated Fritillary - Euptoieta claudia
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
October 7, 2007
According to my records from last year, the latest I saw one of these was on October 1st. I'm surprised to still be seeing such fresh-looking specimens this late in the year. And not only that, there are dozens and dozens of them still around!

Backlighting
I love how this is backlighted ... most excellent photo1

What I did here was to use fill flash with a medium aperture of about f/22. ISO 100 to keep the grain down. It was a bright, sunny day, so it came out balanced like this.

Jeez...
that's beautiful! I'm not seeing as many butterflies out here in my neck O' the woods. You must live near a lot of open fields.

Fields
Well, I live in a small town, (I sound like a John Mellencamp song), toward the edge of it, and across the street there was a house, but it burned down. Behind it is the beginning of a nice, big, vacant field and the Butterflies love it as much as my back yard. So, I always make sure to check it out for Butterflies, and in fact, found this one just this side of the field's edge. And I'm still seeing plenty of Variegated Fritillarys around here and there. Much be something in the air this year that they really like - they're still going strong.
