I Thought I .... - Spilomyia longicornis

I Thought I .... - Spilomyia longicornis
Norfolk, Virginia, USA
October 7, 2007
Size: 12-14mm
was taking an image of a yellow jacket until I saw the head. I then realized it was a fly! Had me fooled for a second :^). I have gotten the ID down to Genus Spilomyia, but I'm not sure about species.

This is one of the most beautiful Syrphids I have ever seen.

Very pretty.
While no expert, I'd say Spilomyia longicornis, due to the markings on the back. Note the size and shape of the "V", plus the fact that the two slashes touch (i.e. they're not broken). Stripes on the abdomen are pretty much unbroken and of relatively the same width. I don't see any other species here with these characteristics. However, I've been convincingly wrong before.

I can
put this image in longicornis. Looks very similar to me as well. Thanks again for your help Ron!
