September 29, 2007

Detail of head and front legs--it was grooming, showing the front tarsomeres 1-3 of male are dilated, have spongy underside, presumably used in mating (1) (2)--a characteristic of genus Chlaenius.

Chlaenius sericeus
Close enough to South Carolina, I ran images and fact "14mm" through Ciegler's key & descriptions and also came up with Chlaenius sericeus as most likely. Good call also on the male gender.

Thanks, more images
I'm adding some more images and information to the guide page, further confirming the identification. (This species is not particularly difficult to identify, but it is nice to understand the descriptions for something which I feel sure of the identity.)
