this beetle is commonly known as a stink bug in this region, although i personally have never experienced any smell at all from one. its a big bug, very " beefy " looking and solidly built.

This is actually a "true bug" in the family Coreidae (leaf-footed bugs). The genus is Acanthocephala. The heavy "thighs" on the hind legs indicate this one is a male. Yes, they do have stink glands, and can spray a noxious liquid if harrassed too much.

Leaffooted Bug (Coreidae)
Not a beetle. This looks like a Leaffooted Bug (Coreidae). I can't say for sure which one. Here is an image of a Leaffooted Bug that is visually similar to yours
