Delphacid - Megamelus davisi

Delphacid - Megamelus davisi
Pennington, Mercer County, New Jersey, USA
October 10, 2007
Size: 3.8 mm
This Delphacid was found in Soft Rush (Juncus effusus) at the edge of a pond. Sorry about all the ID requests lately; I'm spending as much time taking pictures as I can before the weather turns!

Megamelus davisi
This is the darkest member of its genus, and has the largest calcars (moveable flaps on the hind leg). It lives on water lily leaves and can skate across the water surface (see the picture of its nymph on http://bugguide.net/node/view/12134#7868), presumably using its huge calcars as oars.

Thanks for all the views of this strange insect!
