My thought was Apis mellifera, but I'm new to California and didn't know if there were look-a-likes. Thanks!

yes Apis mellifera
only one species in the US
BTW - 'spp' refers to multiple species (so Apis spp would mean multiple Apis species). "Sp" refers to one species (Apis sp. - one species of Apis)
