Specific epithet from Latin macula dorsum meaning "dorsal spot or stain."

Identification
Range
Recorded from the eastern half of the United States and southeastern Canada. (3)
Type locality: Maine (A.S. Packard Jr.). (4), (2)
Food
Larvae recorded on leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne), shrubby St. Johnswort (Hypericum prolificum), laurel (Kalmia), paradise apple (Malus pumila) and Blue Ridge blueberry (Vaccinium pallidum). (5)
