Larva feed on Agave and Yucca. Also called the Agave Weevil. (one of the larger weevils)

I spent a while yesterday trying to figure it on my own but didn't have any luck... looks like it was because I was looking in the wrong genus.

 
yea..
... some of the billbug weevils look very similar. There is also another species: Scyphophorus yuccae, see here: (1) that might be what your weevils are; not sure how to tell the difference.
