Mt Tam Rhagio - Rhagio - female

Mt Tam Rhagio - Rhagio - Female
Rock Springs area, Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, California, USA
April 29, 2018
A number of these snipe flies were perched on bracken fern motionless (torpid) on a cool afternoon.

They keyed unambiguously to genus Rhagio in the MND(1). Details in the form of the antennae, wing venation, and two apical spines on hind tibia are among diagnostic characters.

I added references for getting to species to the info page, but I don't yet have access to them.
