Nematus lipovskyi - Azalea Sawfly - Euura lipovskyi - female

Nematus lipovskyi - Azalea Sawfly - Euura lipovskyi - Female
Beavercreek, Greene County, Ohio, USA
May 1, 2018
Photographed on Rhododendron 'Mandarin Lights' (The Northern Lights series of hardy Azaleas are hybrids with ancestry from R. japonicum, R. molle and R. prinophyllum developed at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum). I am reasonably confident that these photos are all of the same individual, as there are very few adults flying this year (no more than two apparent on the same plant at the same time; some years there are dozens). I found it interesting that this female oviposited on both vegetative and floral buds.
