ground beetle - Notiophilus biguttatus

ground beetle - Notiophilus biguttatus
Harvard, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
April 17, 2005
Size: <1/4"
This one looks odd with big eyes, ridges around the elytra, with a smooth raised middle section. Can this go any further than Carabidae?

This is first MA record of Notiophilus biguttatus.

Moved
Moved from Notiophilus.

Notiophilus sp.
Yay, one I actually recognize:-) These little guys are very distinctive, though. Notiophilus are specialized predators of springtails.

Notiophilus species
Of the 9 species that occur in eastern Canada, biguttatus and nemoralis seem most similar to this one. In Canada, biguttatus is found in New Brunswick, NS and NF, and nemoralis is found only in Quebec, according to this CBIF page. Check out the eyeballs on that first one (aeneus) - almost looks painful.

Rhode Island list
Rhode Island Checklist includes: Notiophilus aeneus Herbst, N. biguttatus (Fabricius) and N. novemstriatus LeConte. The Canadian site illustrates these and I don't see a match.

N. biguttatus -- i have no doubts
