Cycloneda probably polita on Boulder Raspberry - Cycloneda sanguinea - female

Cycloneda probably polita on Boulder Raspberry - Cycloneda sanguinea - Female
6 miles NW Lyons, Boulder County, Colorado, USA
July 12, 2007
Size: BL ~5.5 mm
Seen on Boulder Raspberry in the CO foothills at 6400' elevation. This looks like C. polita with the C-shaped open-circle on the pronotum, but with no separate spot. When I look closely, though, I can see that a section of the C-shape seems to be in the process of calving off and leaving a separate spot as in C. sanguinea. Recently I submitted Cycloneda with such separate spots, taken in the same place two years later on 06/14/2009. See BG 1511303. However, I also found one C polita with a completely separated spot, BG 1067328.

I don't know what to think of these interior Cycloneda
There is a range from AZ to around west TX where these ones with dark legs and an almost intermediate marking occur. More research is needed...

If I had to guess I'd say these were closer to C. sanguinea, but I'm not certain. It is spreading north.

Interior Cyclonedas
Thanks so much for your comments. They are interesting and much appreciated. These lady beetles are so variable, like so many insects. Not every one can be identified with certainty. So often an ID comes down to two possibilities.
