Ground nesting bees. - Colletes thoracicus

Ground nesting bees. - Colletes thoracicus
Sykesville, Howard County, Maryland, USA
May 12, 2018
Size: 1/2 inch
Hundreds, if now thousands were swarming at ground level, the middle of a power line cuts on a relatively steep slope facing south. They were observed entering small holes, perhaps a 1/4 inch in diameter. The buzz was quite audible. They were oblivious to our presence, and I fear we may have stepped on a few.
