Syrphid Fly - Helophilus fasciatus

Syrphid Fly - Helophilus fasciatus
Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
April 17, 2005
Size: ~12 mm
There were quite a few of these buzzing around a vernal pond near our house. Browsing through the guide, my hunch would be that it is a Syrphus sp. Any thoughts?

Helophilus
I'm still learning the syrphids myself, but I think the striped thorax and early date point to a species Helophilus (1). I saw a bunch of these last weekend, especially at a maple swamp that floods in the spring - I wonder if vernal ponds are where their larvae live?

I think you are right Joel,
It looks like a dead-ringer to Patrick's Helophilus image:

Interesting, my vernal pool is only present in the spring and is also in a wooded area rife with maples...
