Eight patch moth -
Glyphidocera floridanella
Maplesville, Chilton County, Alabama, USA
May 11, 2018
This was a dark brown moth that had a "spattered paint" look. He had four black patches at the basal, AM, PM, and subterminal areas. He had a thin double black terminal line.

Why not move li?
The match with my DNA certified
moth
is so perfect that your photos should be moved to the species page to dispel the notion that the species is a Florida specialty (not being an editor, I cannot do it but you can).

Glyphidocera floridanella
After photographing this type moth off and on for 5 years and not being able to learn its ID, I decided to send it in for DNA barcoding (see
here
). Its nice to know now from your observation that it is not strictly a Florida moth. Once we get a BugGuide and MPG page for it, we surely will find out more about its distribution.

Glyphidocera floridanella
Thanks Peter. I've seen this moth about eight times so far this year. It's always a challenge to photograph him because he is so dark. It's not surprising though that we are getting some Florida moths because we didn't have a spring this year in Alabama and it's already in the 90s.
