Coelocnemis?
This is a mating pair, probably a species of Coelocnemis. They can get quite large, and resemble Eleodes at first glance. I have found Coelocnemis californica in pine forest habitat in eastern Oregon. Don't know the habitat you photographed these in.

Coelocnemis
These beetles were in a fairly arrid place in Will Rogers Park, just above Sunset Blvd. in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles County. This wasn't a desert area, although I understand these beetles are common in the Namib.
